Cancer is one of the most prominent causes of death in the Western world. Fifty percent of people who are diagnosed with cancer eventually die of the disease, despite treatments like radiation therapy, chemotherapy and surgery. In the next ten years, the number of diagnoses of cancer will greatly increase. This finds its cause in population ageing, as cancer is indeed a disease that frequently appears in the later stages of life.
In Limburg, the effects of population ageing are felt more strongly that in other parts of the Netherlands. It is here that the increase of cancer diagnoses will be the strongest.
Kankeronderzoekfonds Limburg, a cancer-research foundation, strives to decrease cancer and increase recoveries. For this purpose, it raises funds; specifically in the Maastricht, Limburg and South-eastern Netherlands area.
Kankeronderzoekfonds Limburg was founded by Health Foundation Limburg (HFL), Maastricht University Medical Centre (MUMC) and KWF Dutch Cancer Society.
Research takes place all over the world. Researchers cooperate with several international institutions. An example of this is the cooperation with the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York in the field of immunotherapy research.
